Heather is a lawyer with a practice focused on workplace law. She has a unique combination of legal expertise and extensive hands-on human resources management and labour relations experience. Her past career experience includes managing the human resources of a large private insurance company as well as at the University of British Columbia and working as the first Labour Relations Advisor to Vancouver Community College.
In addition to practicing in all areas of employment and labour law, Heather provides employers with general human resources support and coaching and training. She also conducts workplace cultural/HR audits and provides workplace mediation and investigation services.
In addition to her LLB, Heather has a MSc in Training & Human Resources Management from the University of Leicester and holds a CPHR designation with CPHR BC & Yukon, and a Senior Certified Professional designation with the Society for Human Resource Management in the US. Heather is also a Qualified Mediator.
Heather has represented clients in relation to human rights proceedings, arbitrations, labour board proceedings, privacy, workers compensation, and employment standards matters.
Heather has excellent negotiation and dispute resolution skills and routinely assists clients with settling issues before they proceed to trial. Heather is passionate about workplace integrity and focuses on educating clients on utilizing best practices to avoid/minimize workplace conflict.
Heather is actively involved in the Canadian Bar Association and is the incoming Chair of the CBA’s Small, Solo and General Practice Section for 2024/2025. She has also served as an Executive Member of the CBA National Labour & Employment Law Section and was Chair of the CBA National Constitutional and Human Rights Section in 2020/2021.
Heather presents regularly on workplace law matters and mediation at CLEBC conferences and other legal and HR webinars, workshops and conferences including with Lancaster House, HR Insider and ADRBC. Heather is committed to mentoring junior lawyers and HR professionals and has been actively involved as a mentor in the CBA, CPHR BC & Yukon, and Beedie School of Business mentoring programs.
Heather is an avid traveller, ardent reader, current affairs enthusiast and an active supporter of animal rights causes.
